The Art of Compliance with Irnise Williams, Esq.

Irnise Williams, who goes by Your Nurse Lawyer online, talked us through the importance of compliance and why new business owners need to ensure their practice is in regulation with industry standards.

Being a registered nurse for 13 years gave Williams insight into the healthcare industry and taught her firsthand how critical the health and beauty world really is. She ultimately decided to switch careers and become a healthcare and compliance lawyer, and, with seven years of being an attorney under her belt, we're curious to get her advice on how to start a new business.

What made you decide to be a healthcare and compliance lawyer?

“I loved being a nurse, but I saw many inefficiencies and misinterpretations of the law that led to confusion and sometimes bad outcomes. I wanted to bridge the gap to help patients and providers to understand what is expected of them and how they can work together to improve healthcare outcomes.”

What exactly is compliance and why is it important?

“Compliance is the continual process of ensuring that you are following the laws and regulations surrounding your work. Compliance is the checks and balances that comes with offering a product or service that could impact someone's life.”

Advice to those just starting out in the health/beauty business industry?

“There are so many amazing opportunities out there.”

What are the most common mistakes new business owners tend to make?

“Many new business owners over-invest at the beginning of the business instead of focusing on learning how to run an efficient business. Some new business owners don't have a plan for the revenue that they are generating, and instead, they reinvest all of their revenue back into the business instead of saving money for taxes and paying themselves a salary. Lastly, many new business owners underestimate the power of systems, automation, and workflows. This will help improve their customer experience and cut time on the manual work that they have to do on their own.”

What do you love most about your work?

“I love that I can help my clients bring clarity to their businesses so that they can make sound business decisions. People see compliance as a pain instead of a way to avoid future problems. I love the work that I do and the role that I play in my client's businesses.”
